Define addiction?

I have somewhat of a contraversal question to ask.Do you think that cutting is an addiction or a controlled, low way of getting attention.I personally think its a very strong addiction but im having a hard time convinceing people of it so perhaps im wrong.What do you think?And if you do think its an addiction,any ideas on how to help it?
