On Sunday, May 18, Michelle Meldrum, leader of the band MELDRUM and former PHANTOM BLUE guitarist, was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank, California in critical condition. Three days later — yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, May 21) — she passed away as a result of a cystic growth on her brain that had restricted oxygen and blood flow to her brain, rendering her braindead.

Michelle had just completed writing and recording MELDRUM's soon-to-be-released third album with drummer Gene Hoglan, along with the group's latest additions, Michele Madden (vocals) and Laura Christine (bass). The surviving bandmembers plan to release the CD later this year in tribute to their fallen bandmate.

Those who knew Michelle recognize that she lived every moment for the music and was regarded as both an exceptional guitarist and a nurturer by her associates, friends, family and son.

Meldrum, 39, is survived by her parents and three-year-old son Jake Thomas (father is EUROPE guitarist John Norum). Her family and bandmembers appreciate all the support that has been shown over the past few days through this trying time. A memorial tribute benefit will be announced in the following weeks.

Michelle's former PHANTOM BLUE bandmate Linda McDonald, who played on MELDRUM's 2007 CD "Blowin' Up The Machine", commented: "Michelle passed away about 6:00 p.m. this evening [Wednesday, May 21] at the hospital. It comes as a complete shock and the impact will be felt by so many. She was a one of a kind and will be sorely missed. I don't really know what to say right now. Thank you for your prayers. I'm sure she heard them all. It is a very sad, sad day."

Michelle Meldrum was born on September 28, 1968 in Detroit, Michigan to a family of musicians and actors, and moved to Los Angeles, California at the age of 13. She started her career in music by forming the thrash metal band WARGOD with drummer Gene Hoglan (DARK ANGEL, DEATH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD), then moved on to become both co-founder and lead guitarist in PHANTOM BLUE. PHANTOM BLUE released its self-titled debut album on Shrapnel Records in the U.S. (Roadrunner in Europe and Japan) and eventually landed a major label deal with Geffen.

While her career flourished, Michelle married EUROPE guitarist John Norum and moved to Sweden to form MELDRUM. After many successful tours with such acts as MOTÖRHEAD and BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, she reunited with Gene in 2006 when he appeared as a guest on MELDRUM album and events. Inspired to once again collaborate, Michelle moved back to America where she and Gene began writing the third MELDRUM album together.

Michelle Meldrum (September 28, 1968 – May 21, 2008) was an American hard rock guitarist.
Meldrum was born in Detroit, Michigan, to a family of musicians and actors (grandfather Thomas Hubbard and Great Uncle Elbert Hubbard). The family moved to Los Angeles, California when Meldrum was 13. Her first move was forming thrash metal band Wargod with later Dark Angel, Death and Strapping Young Lad drummer Gene Hoglan, then moving on to become both co-founder and lead guitarist in Phantom Blue. Phantom Blue released their self titled debut album on Shrapnel Records in the US (Roadrunner Records in Europe & Japan, and on to a major label deal with Geffen). The band toured internationally with much success.
She married John Norum in 1995[1] and they moved to Sweden where Michelle began putting together the international line-up of Meldrum. Meldrum went on to form Meldrum, a multi-national hard rock band. The band, fronted by Moa Holmsten's mammoth vocal style, combines aggressively melodic vocals, mind bending guitar riffs, along with a rhythm section creating fiercely bombastic grooves, giving Meldrum their unique, cutting edge sound. In 2005 Meldrum toured for three months with Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society, appearing in sold out venues across the US and Europe. In the fall of 2005 Meldrum joined Motörhead as special guests on their 30th anniversary tour throughout Europe. Meldrum has also toured with Sepultura, Danzig and Nashville Pussy, among others.
Meldrum fell into a coma on May 18, 2008 as a result of a cerebral/brain hemorrhage. She passed away on May 21 due to a cystic growth on her brain that had restricted the oxygen and blood flow to her brain, rendering her braindead. She is survived by her parents, her husband John Norum and their son, Jake Thomas. A memorial tribute benefit will be announced in the following weeks. [2]
Meldrum had just completed writing and recording a new album at the time, which the surviving band members plan to release later this year in tribute to her. [2]
Guitarist with rock bands Phantom Blue and Meldrum
Michelle Meldrum, who died on 21 May, 2008, after three days in a coma, was the lead guitarist with the all-girl hard rock outfit Phantom Blue and then her own band, Meldrum.
Phantom Blue emerged in the late 1980s, recorded three albums and toured the world before Michelle left in 1994. She formed Meldrum in the late 1990s and they played with Motörhead, Black Label Society, Sepultura, Danzig and Nashville Pussy.
Despite attempts by record companies to turn her into a sex symbol, she remained true to her original musical ambitions and shunned the mainstream with an aggressive and forthright style. She was married to Europe guitarist John Norum and they had a three-year-old son, Jake.
Michelle Meldrum was born on 28 September, 1968, in Detroit. Many members of her family were musicians and entertainers - her great uncle was the arts and crafts champion Elbert Hubbard - and she learned the guitar young.
At 13 her family moved to LA and a few years later she formed her first thrash metal band with friend and drummer Gene Hoglan (who would go on to play with the metal outfit Strapping Young Lad). Wargod were featured on several rock compilations of the era.
She then teamed up with Gigi Hangach, Nicole Couch, Kim Nielsen and Linda McDonald to form Phantom Blue in 1987. They were signed to Shrapnel Records, released their self-titled debut album in 1989 and had a minor hit with the single Why Call it Love?
Despite promising early record sales and successful tours, Phantom Blue became an increasingly untenable operation due in part to tension between the members but mainly because of record company pressure. The label was keen to exploit the sex appeal of the five girls, so dressed them up in incongruous glam outfits and filmed them inside a male prison, much to the band's distaste.
By the time they had found a more suitable record deal with Griffin Records to put out follow-up album Built to Perform, much of their momentum had been lost. The line-up became unstable and Meldrum jumped ship in 1994, shortly before the independent release of Prime Cuts & Glazed Donuts and the eventual collapse of the band.
She married John Norum in 1995 and they moved to Sweden where Michelle began putting together the international line-up of Meldrum. With vocals by Moa Holmsten and an evolving rhythm section, Meldrum recorded Loaded Metal Cannon in 2000, though its release was delayed by a year.
In 2005 they toured America and Europe supporting Motörhead, the highlight of their career thus far. The following year she was reunited with Gene Hoglan after a 10-year estrangement in time for him to join the band for their second album Blowin' Up The Machine (2007).
Holmsten had recently been replaced by Australian singer Michele Madden (formerly of Tourettes) and the band had been working in the studio on new material when Meldrum was taken ill on 17 May. News of her coma quickly spread onto the internet and there were several rumours of her death before it was confirmed by the band.

According to a press release by VQPR, Michelle had been admitted to St Joseph's Hospital in Burbank on May 18th, and had slipped into a coma before passing.

Meldrum had recently announced a new band line-up, and had just completed the bands soon to be released album with drummer Gene Hoglan, Michele Madden (vocals) and Laura Christine (bass). The surviving band members plan to release the album later this year in tribute to their fallen band-mate.

As someone who personally knew Michelle as a friend and business associate, I can say that Meldrum was known in many circles, not only for her ground-breaking strides as a female musician in the Metal world, but for her compassion, and love. Never one to gossip or talk sh*t, Michelle was a shining example as a musician, friend, and most of all a mother to her three year old son Jake Thomas Norum.

Meldrum, 39 is survived by her parents, and three year old son, Jake Thomas.
Meldrum's Management, Dark Moon Entertainment will announce a memorial tribute benefit in the following weeks, and an education fund will be set up for Michelle's son Jake. Immediate Cash Donations to assist the family in this time of need can be made via pay-pal MichelleMeldrumFund@Gmail.com
