Well for the benefit of those who read this and don't , they were Viking mercenaries employed by the Byzantine Emperors [Eastern Roman Empire] they were the elite of the elite - the most fearless in battle but the most trusted and honourable of his troops - the Viking Harald Hadrada who failed to defeat King Harold of England in 1066 before Harold had to rush south for his fateful encounter with good old William the Conquer had been a Varangian Guard *grin*
